From Struggle to Strength: Virginia's Story

A small loan, a roadside stall, and a woman who can now look toward tomorrow with hope.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

— Proverbs 31:25

From Struggle to Strength

In IL-Kerin Village, IL-Kerin Sub-location, Narok County, lives 30-year-old Virginia, a determined farmer, businesswoman, and mother of four—two boys and two girls, ranging in age from three to eight.

Like many families in rural Narok County, Virginia and her husband depended largely on small-scale farming to provide for their family. But unpredictable rainfall often made it difficult to harvest enough food to meet the needs of their household of six.

For Virginia, everything began to change in May 2025.

That month, she joined the IL-Kerin Praise and Worship Microfinance Group at her church. Together with other women from the community, she began learning a new way to think about money, business, and the future.

With guidance from Special Ministries, the members were trained in saving, borrowing, and the basics of starting and managing a small business.

Virginia soon took her first loan of 10,000 Kenyan Shillings ($78 US) and used it to open a small roadside grocery stall. What began as a simple business quickly became popular among people in the community. Sales increased, and within six months, Virginia was able to repay her loan.

The trainings have opened my eyes. I now know how to plan, budget, and make wise financial decisions.

“Before joining the IL-Kerin Hope Loans Microfinance Group, I often struggled to provide for my family and had nowhere to turn when I needed money except my already overwhelmed husband,” Virginia says. “Through the group, I’ve learned how to save and access small loans to grow my business. The trainings have opened my eyes. I now know how to plan, budget, and make wise financial decisions.”

Her growing business came at an especially important time.

Virginia had also welcomed her late sister’s son into her home and was carrying the added responsibility of paying his school fees. As the profits from her grocery stall increased, she has been able to help keep all the children in school while also meeting the everyday needs of her household. But for Virginia, the microfinance group has become about much more than money.

“The support from the other women keeps me going,” she explains. “We encourage one another like family. Even when the rains fail or business is slow, our savings help us stay strong. I’ve managed to pay school fees and expand my vegetable stall.”

A New Chapter

Virginia joyfully credits God and the support of Special Ministries and Helping Kenya Kids for opening a new chapter in her life. What began with a small Hope Loan has grown into something much larger: confidence, stability, community, and hope for the future.

Perhaps one of the greatest changes cannot be measured in shillings at all.

Most importantly, I now have a stronger voice in my home and in the group.

“My husband and I make financial decisions together, and I feel more confident about the future,” Virginia says. “This Hope Loans project has truly changed how I think, plan, and live my day-to-day life.”

As Virginia smiles, there is a sense that the change taking place is about more than a successful roadside stall.

It is the quiet confidence of a woman who can now look toward tomorrow with hope.
